Rated 1 out of 5 by Tsanta1885 from Sad little girl Bought this today so my step dad could teach my 7 year old daughter how to fish. Got out in the boat and within 5 minutes, the line snapped. We realized very quickly that the screw on the side is absolutely useless. Had my husband try to fix it, who by the way, can fix pretty much anything, he's old school and fixes things so they don't get thrown in a landfill and he said it's a peice of junk. Never had a fishing rod where you cant replace the line!! Needless to say, I had a heartbroken little girl. Very disappointed!!!!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by AmyW from Awful design You know, I didnt expect much for the price of this product. However, knowing that kids will probably mess up the line, the design should be that which parents can take it apart and fix it if needed. The plastic screw on the side makes that absolutely impossible. At a first attempt to open it, the screw completely stripped. It seems as though the company just wants you to be forced to purchase a new one, which is disappointing. Everything else about the product is fine, but inevitably you WILL have to undo that screw at some point and then the quality of the rest of the product doesn't matter

Rated 1 out of 5 by madmama6196 from I bought this not even a hour ago and already the line is in the reel and I can not retrieve it due to the retainer "plug screw" stripping rather then opening. I'm now out on my family fishing trip with a sad 4 year old girl. Disappointed. Seems y'all should change the designs with so many bad reviews of this individual feature!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Acacia1313 from Plastic screws/lost line fishing finished for us Bought this rod n reel set for my three girls. Of course we caught a few rocks. And a few trees. No problems. Until we lost the line in the reel. Then we encountered the plastic screw so that was impossible. So now we have a reel with no way to put the stripped screw back into it. We won't be buying a replacement. Having three girls aged 8-3 I thought this would be great to introduce them to fishing. Nope nope nope don't buy it until they replace screw with a metal one. You'll never be able to replace the line when you run out . Sad little girls

Rated 1 out of 5 by Ryan the conquerer from Cannot get into reel I cannot get into the reel because the cheap plastic screw holding the cover in place is, well, cheap.

Rated 1 out of 5 by JD R from What a joke! Like all the other reviews, the same thing just happened to my 5 year old daughter. This is her first fishing pole and was very excited to fish with it. Within in the first 5 minutes she broke the line and ended up reeling it into the reel. I wasnt expecting much for the price, but come on! I can’t believe that a company like Shakespeare would even produce something like this. I ended up with a crying five year old and now have to travel 60 minutes round trip to get a replacement. As my title says, what a joke!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Fishdaddy1980 from Useless Can't even string the thing from the plastic screw that just turns but doesnt allow access inside the reel. I'm seeing tons of reviews like my poor experience. Very unhappy. Poor design and Shakespeare has done a poor job supporting this issue.

Rated 1 out of 5 by GrandpaArt from A disappointment to young and old alike I bought this as a birthday present for my 6 year old granddaughter--her first fishing rod/reel. I went out expecting to buy a Zebco, because I know their cheap reels work. But then I saw the Shakespeare Princess set, and my granddaughter loves purple, so I was persuaded. She couldn't wait to try out her new rod and reel, so we went out the evening of her birthday to get her acquainted with casting using the practice plug that comes with the unit. After a few casts, the line broke and she reeled the line back up into the reel. No problem, I thought. I expected to be able to screw the cover off and re-thread the line through the cover. Then I ran into the now infamous screw, and could not get the cover off. She is sad, thinks she broke it, and I am wishing I had bought a Zebco instead of this.
