Product Reviews

Shakespeare® Spiderman® Lighted Kit is rated 1.3 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Button broke off after a couple days. We were going to a cottage for a week, and my father-in-law bought this rod for our six-year-old daughter for her to use there. She was super-excited, had a great time, and landed a dozen or so fish (including a largemouth bass). We even started calling it her "lucky rod". We spoke too soon... After about the fourth use, the casting button broke off, making the rod essentially useless. Our daughter was pretty heartbroken at not being able to fish anymore. The rod is less than two weeks old, so I checked the warranty terms on the website, and they charge a $10.55 (CDN) service fee for warranty service. Which isn't much less than the cost of the rod to begin with.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Problems from the start Just bought it today missing casting plug. No instructions on how to open and retrieve line inside spool. Screw would just spin and spin and had to mangle screw to open. This was a gift far a young child, what a let down.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Plastic screws? Same issue it seems as everyone else. My son used it for about 20 min then the line went back inside the reel. After spending 20min trying to unscrew the plastic screw to get the housing off to reline the pole, we gave up. I didn't want to break off the plastic screw and have the housing not be able to stay on. I know this might be marketed as a 'toy' but kids don't know the difference and when they are able to use it and have fun only to be extremely disappointed 20 min later that's bad. It's a shame because it so much fun for them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice rod/reel combo for a 5 year old but... Bought two of these, one for each grandson 3 & 5 year olds. The older boy actually caught a fish. He also can cast it easily. The problem was later that day he wanted to practice casting some more. The casting push button broke at the two yellow plastic axle pins. Both sheared right off and the button fell out. I drilled a hole through the reel and push button and pushed a thin nail through. It worked for now. I think the plastic axle pins need to be stronger to hold up to the thumb pressure of a 5 year old.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money Bought this pole for my grandson. The line came out but no way to open reel to fix it! I've had to set and listen to a 3 yr old screaming while I relentlessly tried to unscrew a plastic screw that does nothing but turn! I am soo angry! I'm sitting here with 4 grandkids under 5 yrs old , and 2 brand new-fangled broken worthless fishing poles. At $12 eat could have bought 1 Zebco and let them take turns fishing, instead of smiles I have a bucket of kids tears! Shame on this company

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A fishing nightmare I recently bought three of these poles at a fishing promotion at Mills Fleet Farm (one for each of my kids- 1 Spiderman and two Barbies). The first few casts were fun, then they they got all tangle up, as poles do. I couldn't get the reel open when I wanted to restring the line. Well, that appears to be impossible with this cheap and flimsy plastic screw that is included with each pole. I first tried a screwdriver with the Barbie one. Nope, that didn't work. In fact it destroyed the screw. Then I tried a penny with the Spiderman pole. Nope. That had a similar effect. I am so disappointed in these products. The fun lasted about 20 minutes. Now I have three very sad kids. It appears that ALL of the children poles from Shakespeare have the same issue (Moana, Disney Princesses, Barbie, Spiderman). I would suggest discontinuing this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Plastic screw I bought this a couple of days ago and I cannot get the plastic screw undone just as the other reviewers stated. We had a similar rod but I don't remember the screw being there. Probably not worth it based on the current configuration. As I type my other son's string just went back into the reel so that's two poles down...no fishing durby tomorrow.
